Meritus currently offers esophageal manometry and will offer 24-hour pH testing in the very near future. We are the first and only motility clinic within a 40-mile radius- no more driving to Baltimore for your patients! This specialized study is now offered close to home.
Esophageal manometry is THE definitive test to evaluate esophageal motility (movement of food from esophagus into stomach) and is necessary in the diagnosis of the actual cause of your patient’s dysphagia (trouble swallowing or food getting stuck) and reflux. Manometry is used to define and diagnose achalasia and hiatal hernia. We will measure the force of contraction and coordination of muscles involved in moving food from the esophagus into the stomach.
We use a highly specialized, flexible catheter that is passed through one nostril and down into the esophagus. There is no sedation for this procedure, so no down time or recovery is needed. The active part of the procedure should take less than 30 minutes. If pH testing is added, the patient will go home with the equipment and record their next 24 hours as instructed. The equipment will then be returned to Meritus for interpretation.
