Dr. Paulasir is a trauma, critical care, and acute care surgeon with a passion for surgical education, research, and process improvement. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Paulasir brings a wealth of experience to his role as the inaugural program director for surgical residency at Meritus Health. Dr. Paulasir completed his medical education at Loma Linda University and his general surgical residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He further honed his expertise through a fellowship in surgical critical care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School and a certificate course in biostatistics at Harvard Catalyst. Throughout his career, Dr. Paulasir has demonstrated a commitment to teaching and mentorship, earning two faculty teaching awards while serving as a core faculty and associate program director at Henry Ford Health Jackson in Michigan. He also served as the medical director of research at that institution, guiding numerous research projects and implementing process improvement initiatives. Dr. Paulasir's dedication to leadership and healthcare innovation is further evident in his completion of an MBA at Quantic School of Business and Technology and his role as vice chair of the operations subcommittee at his previous institution. In his current role at Meritus Health, Dr. Paulasir leverages his prior experience to build a robust surgical residency program from the ground up. He is committed to training the next generation of surgeons, instilling in them the same passion for excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care that has defined his own career. In his free time, Dr. Paulasir enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two young daughters.
Brian Cantor, M.D.

Dr. Cantor has performed more than 4,000 elective and emergent surgical procedures during his career at Meritus Health and other surrounding institutions. He has served as the medical director in the Division of Bariatric Surgery at two hospitals and is a medical officer for the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). His wealth of knowledge will be beneficial to the residents and their education. Dr. Cantor is a diplomate for the American Board of Surgery (ABS), a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Dr. Diaz is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis in 2021, followed by fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Tower Health‘s Reading Hospital in Reading in 2022. He maintains dual board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Following the completion of his training, Dr. Diaz was an attending surgeon for Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, a busy level 1 trauma center where he practiced trauma surgery, emergency and elective general surgery, surgical critical care, and burn surgery. During that time, he served as assistant professor for the University of Missouri’s Springfield Clinical Campus, with teaching and precepting responsibilities for residents and medical students on trauma and general surgery services.
He joined Meritus in October 2023 as a trauma and acute care surgeon with the dual aims of helping to develop an academic trauma program with plans for ACS Level 2 designation, as well as to help develop the Meritus General Surgery Residency Program. Dr. Diaz has a particular passion for resident and student education and brings a unique experience to Meritus, having himself been a graduate of the inaugural surgery residency class at Anne Arundel Medical Center and being selected by his faculty and peers to receive the Resident Excellence in Teaching award. He later served as teaching fellow and mentor to surgical residents of the inaugural class at Reading Hospital. His other interests include Surgical Quality and Performance Improvement, Global Surgery and Surgery in Austere and Rural Environments, the application of Minimally Invasive Techniques for Trauma and Emergency General Surgery, and Trauma Video Review. He is an active member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Burn Association. He is an Initiate of the American College of Surgeons and will be inducted into fellowship in October 2024.

Has been a member of the board of directors of Washington County Hospital. He is a longstanding member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and is a National Board diplomat.

Dr. Eric Maiorino is a young, Board-certified, energetic surgeon with an unparalleled drive. Dr. Maiorino has been recognized throughout his career for his compassion, talent and work ethic, winning awards at every level of training, including recently being recognized by the Washingtonian Magazine as a Top Doctor. An incredibly caring and skilled practitioner, Dr. Maiorino has experience performing a wide array of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, with a special interest in body contouring, breast contouring and facial rejuvenation. However, his true passion is helping women navigate breast reconstruction after cancer treatments, where his compassion and talents can shine in a way that can help people after a challenging time.

Dr. Jamal specializes in bariatric surgery but also consults for general and trauma surgery. He is the division chief of Bariatric Surgery at Meritus and has more than 20 years of experience in his field. Throughout his career, he has mentored PGY-4 and PGY-5 residents to prepare them for their ABS exams as well as participated in grand rounds and presented at several conferences. Dr. Jamal is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMGS) and he is a voting member of SSMC and Peer Review Committee at Meritus.

Dr. Remick is a trauma surgeon with a passion for improvement of clinical trauma care and leadership for trauma and emergency care systems. He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years with deployments in support of combat operations and military assignments to include special operations aviation with Task Force Dagger in 2001, multiple forward/austere surgical teams in Afghanistan and Syria, as clinical medical director at a U.K. field hospital in Afghanistan, military deputy director for the Defense Department’s Combat Casualty Research Program, combat theater trauma director and field hospital CMO in Iraq, and lead for several Defense Department-sponsored trauma systems assessments. In September 2019, he retired from the Army at the rank of colonel and rejoined the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine as professor of surgery and associate chair for operations and readiness. In this capacity, he led the USU KSA Clinical Readiness Program to improve expeditionary and combat trauma readiness across the Defense Department. He also spearheaded trauma and emergency medical system readiness across the Defense Health National Capital Region and represented USU and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to the state trauma leadership in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. In 2023, he left federal service for his current position as division chief and trauma medical director at Meritus Medical Center, with the goal to build a level 2, academic trauma center for Western Maryland. Under his leadership, Meritus provides the highest quality care for those injured or with acute surgical disease with an eye on continuous performance improvement and value-based care. His primary academic interests include continuous performance improvement in quality and value-based clinical care, optimizing care for the injured globally, and disaster planning and preparedness. He has been happily married for 22 years and enjoys raising his five children.
Karl Riggle, M.D.

Dr. Riggle works in a private practice but performs his surgeries at Meritus. With more than 30 years of experience, he will be able to share his wealth of knowledge with the residents as they rotate with him. He has experience in precepting PA students from different schools and precepts medical students from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Riggle travels to Africa yearly to provide care to people there. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, and the Eastern Association of the Surgery of Trauma and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Sachs has more than 30 years of experience as a surgeon and has interest in endovascular, breast, trauma and critical care surgery as well as general surgery. He has been with Meritus since 2017 and picks up shifts with the trauma team on a monthly basis where they perform critical care management including ventilator management. Dr. Sachs is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association and the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Shabbir is an acute care surgeon at Meritus Medical Center. He completed his residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital where, in his chief year, he was responsible for creating a surgical education curriculum to assist in improving ABSITE scores for the residents. After completing his fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Grant Medical Center, he spent one year at Texas Tech University closely working with residents in a teaching role. Additionally, he worked as a TRIAL Program supervisor where he helped medical students transition into residency. Dr. Shabbir is in the process of creating formal practice guidelines for the trauma program and runs the monthly acute care surgery journal club. Dr. Shabbir has a passion for teaching and is looking forward to teaching residents again at Meritus.
