Salvatore DiMercurio, M.D.

Dr. Sal DiMercurio is a seasoned board-certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He was the founder of the Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in (1995-2022) and is currently the director of Meritus Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in the same location. He is known for his compassionate care and passion for achieving beautiful aesthetic results for both his cosmetic and reconstructive patients. Dr. DiMercurio has also provided plastic surgical lectures to both medical professionals and the community for the last 30 years and welcomes medical and physician assistant students into the operating room when he is working. He has been recognized by Verstanding Media as the Best Plastic Surgeon in the tri-state area for the last several years.

Training and Experience

Born in Sicily and immigrated to New York when he was 5 years old, Dr. DiMercurio earned his bachelor's degree from Queens College in Queens, NY and his medical degree in 1984 from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan, New York City (now the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai). Here he was honored to be president of his medical school class. Following medical school, he completed 5 years of general surgical training at Stony Brook University Hospital in Long Island, New York. He then completed a 3-year plastic surgical fellowship at the University of Virginia where he achieved advanced fellowship certification in hand surgery, burn surgery, microvascular surgery, craniofacial, and cosmetic surgery.

Memberships

Dr. DiMercurio has held the position of Chief of Staff of Washington County Hospital, Board of Directors at Washington County Hospital and president of Maryland State Society of Plastic Surgery. He was a 23-year member of Rotary International, and a founding member of Children in Need charity here in Hagerstown. He has been a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery since 1995 and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Research

• Cultured epidermal cell for massive burn patients. His research resulted in the ability to grow enough lab skin from a stamp size area of a burn patient's body to cover the surface of the entire burned patient's body with their own skin.
• Kinesthetic aftereffect as a modality of personality style. His research resulted in the ability to determine how patient's perceives pain based on their personalities.
• Radial forearm expanded free flap for neck reconstruction. Resulted in the first expanded radial forearm free tissue transfer.
