In recognition of American Stroke Month this May, Meritus Medical Center is raising awareness about the warning signs of stroke and the importance of acting quickly using the BE FAST acronym, a simple tool that helps the public recognize stroke symptoms and seek emergency care without delay.
Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States, but fast recognition and treatment can significantly improve outcomes. BE FAST stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech and Time, highlighting the most common signs that someone may be having a stroke.
“When it comes to stroke, every minute truly matters,” said Jennifer Smith, B.S.N., R.N., stroke care specialist at Meritus Medical Center. “BE FAST empowers people to recognize subtle but serious symptoms and act immediately. Calling 911 at the first sign of a stroke can save brain function, independence and even a life.”
Recognizing the early signs of stroke — even those that may seem mild or temporary — is critical to getting appropriate care as quickly as possible.
“Many patients hesitate because they’re unsure if what they’re experiencing is serious, but delaying care can have lifelong consequences,” said Kristin Patrie, B.S.N., R.N., stroke care specialist at Meritus Medical Center. “If something feels sudden or unusual, it’s always better to call 911 and let medical professionals make that determination.”
B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E – Eyes: Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
F – Face: Facial drooping or uneven smile
A – Arm: Arm or leg weakness, especially on one side
S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking or understanding
T – Time: Time to call 911 right away
Meritus Medical Center encourages community members to share the BE FAST message with friends, family, and coworkers, especially with those who may be at higher risk for stroke.
Throughout American Stroke Month, Meritus will continue its commitment to stroke prevention, rapid treatment and community education to ensure residents of the region have access to life-saving care when it matters most.
