Being part of a team means being included and supported, things that teammates rely on one another and their coach to supply. With that idea in mind, Meritus Health, Western Maryland’s largest health system, has undertaken an innovative rebranding initiative within the human resources department.

“If people are engaged with their work, and are finding meaning in what they do, they can work alongside their colleagues to work smarter. It’s a win-win for both the employee and employer,” said Maulik Joshi, Dr.P.H., Meritus Medical Center President & CEO.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American works 8.8 hours every day. Where workers spend a significant amount of their day, matters.

It also matters to employers, because happy people are better workers.

“While we don’t all wear the same uniforms, we are on the same team working under our mission to provide comprehensive medical care to our community,” Joshi said.

When employees aren’t engaged, or are afraid to ask for help, they are making things more difficult for their colleagues and the company as a whole, and the team begins to struggle.

“No one likes to be called to the principal’s office, or have to sit the bench,” Joshi said. “We want our employees to know we are here to help them succeed, and eliminate that daunting stigma of going to the human resources department.” he said.

As part of the redesign, leadership members at Meritus Health are now referred to as “coaches.”

“’To lead’ is the verb; that’s what the coaches do. The coach is there to support the team, build them up, give them the resources and help them learn the skills to succeed,” Joshi explained.

The health system rolled out the new initiative during Hospital & Health System Week in the spring. It’s been met with enthusiasm by team members within the (former) human resources department.

“Being part of a team means being partners. When you feel a part of something, you increase your happiness, confidence and motivation,” Joshi said.
