Medical Student Rotations

Thank you for your interest in the Meritus Family Medicine Residency Program. The Coalition for Physician Accountability released updated recommendations on medical student away rotations for the 2021-2022 academic year. We want to honor the recommendations of this multispecialty workgroup while preserving the ability to treat all students as fairly as possible.

Given the suggested recommendations for the 2021-2022 academic year in addition to the abilities of the Meritus Family Medicine Residency Program, medical student away rotations will resume no earlier than 08/01/2021 and will adhere to the following guidelines:

Learners may begin applying for a two-week in-person away rotation on 04/01/2021 by completing the Student Rotation Request Form. Request forms will be processed no earlier than 05/01/2021. Away rotations may be requested for a two-week period between 09/01/2021 and 11/30/2021.

Medical student away rotations will be considered for the following groups of learners:

  • Fourth -year medical students
  • Learners who have a family medicine interest and do not have access to a clinical experience with a family medicine residency program in their school's system.
  • Learners for whom an away rotation is required for graduation or accreditation requirements.
  • Learners who are not scheduled for more than one (1) away rotation.

For D.O. students:

  • Must have passed COMLEX Level 1 on the first attempt and have completed COMLEX Level 2 CE (we understand the Level 2 score may not be available yet).

For M.D. students:

  • Must have passed USMLE Step 1 on the first attempt and have completed USLME Step 2CK (we understand the Step 2 score may not be available yet).

All requesting students must:

  • Provide a curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Be a student of an LCME or COCA accredited medical school
  • Have ties and/or interest in the Hagerstown region
  • Provide a Personal Statement
  • Describe why they are interested in the Meritus Family Medicine Residency Program
  • Provide appropriate documentation verifying the student is fully vaccinated against COVID

To request an away rotation, please complete the Student Rotation Request Form and submit along with your CV and personal statement by email to After the information has been received and reviewed, the student will be notified of the status of the rotation request.

Please note:If you are accepted for an away rotation, additional documentation will be requested from you or your school prior to starting. Please allow time for application processing. If you are selected for a rotation, you will receive a confirmation email.
