Individualized Care for Knee Replacement Surgery

Individualized Care for Knee Replacement Surgery

As a lawyer, Sherman likes to be prepared. So, when he learned he needed knee replacement surgery, he searched the internet to learn more about the procedure—but that research made him fearful. Even after a successful surgery, Sherman was anxious about his pain and recovery—and that’s when Meritus Medical Center nurses stepped in.

From fear to recovery

“The Meritus nurses had the expertise and ability to alleviate my fears,” says Sherman. “This was my third knee procedure and being in other hospitals, I never experienced anything like this. The professionalism, protocols, the gestures, it was unbelievable.” As Sherman explained, his nurses not only addressed his pain, but talked him through it.

The day after his surgery, Sherman’s rehabilitation nurses explained the importance of exercise to prevent blood clots, got him out of bed and trained him on how to use a walker. In a “mock” apartment, therapists showed Sherman and his wife how to safely transfer from a bed or chair and how to navigate in the kitchen or bathroom.

While Sherman was impressed with his care team’s knowledge, he was also struck by their caring attitude. “It was more than just their training,” says Sherman. “I felt they were concerned about me, like it was their calling.”

The total package

Fully recovered from his surgery, Sherman plans to have his second knee replacement procedure performed at Meritus Medical Center. “Things are different here,” says Sherman. “You’re not just a number.” In Sherman’s words, Meritus is the “total package.” And if he could personally thank all of his nurses and therapists on the hospital’s rehabilitation unit, Sherman says, “I would thank them for helping me help myself.”
