Eight Days at Meritus Medical Center

Eight Days at Meritus Medical Center

At 52, Dan was a healthy, hard-working operations manager at a distribution company. Except now he was at Meritus Medical Center’s emergency department doubled over in pain and struggling to breathe. When doctors ordered a CT scan, it revealed the source of his pain: an infection in the colon—and a tumor.

A dynamic duo

As soon as Dan was admitted to the hospital, his surgeon, Stephen Sachs, M.D., and gastroenterologist, Chintamaneni Choudari, M.D., worked as a team to explain and begin the treatment plan. Dr. Choudari used a diagram to show Dan how the tumor had ruptured the wall of the colon. To prepare for surgery the following day, Dr. Sachs observed Dr. Choudari perform Dan’s colonoscopy. After a successful surgery and 15 inches of his colon removed, Dan was on his way to recovery.

Care a mother would give

For the next five days, the nursing team on the hospital’s third floor nurtured Dan back to health. “It was like my mom was taking care of me,” says Dan. But with post-surgical swelling and some pain, Dan couldn’t get comfortable, so his nurse made him a pillow of wrapped bed sheets. On the handmade pillow, the nurse wrote, “Hug me.”

“That nurse went above and beyond,” says Dan. “He sat and talked to me like a person, not a patient.” The rest of the nursing staff attended to Dan’s every need. “I would push the call button and they were right there.”

A satisfied patient

Today, Dan is healthy and back to work. He still has the pillow his nurse made for him and fondly recalls his patient care experience. “If I could write a book, it would be called, Eight Days at Meritus because everything was about me getting better.” Once afraid of hospitals, Dan says he wouldn’t think twice about returning to Meritus Medical Center.
