Meritus Health announces retirement of long-serving physician

Press Releases

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – For the last three decades, Dr. Michael McCormack has been the cornerstone of medical oncology in Western Maryland.

“It’s been a great privilege that people put their trust in me in a very important time in their lives,” Dr. McCormack said. “It’s very humbling and very rewarding.”

Throughout the duration of his career, Dr. McCormack has provided care to more than 7,700 patients.

Now, retirement is on the horizon. At the end of the year, Dr. McCormack will see his last patient at Meritus Hematology and Oncology Specialists.

The compassionate, expert level of care that he has demonstrated over the years will not cease with his retirement. Abigail Kick, CRNP, will be joining current medical oncologists in providing collaborative management of Dr. McCormack’s former patients.

“It’s really an honor for me to provide continuation of care to those patients Dr. McCormack has served so faithfully during his tenure,” Kick said. “I strive to continue the expert care they received, and to maintain and build new and lasting provider/patient relationships,” she added.

Kick brings to Meritus a background that includes a full-spectrum of care -- assessment, diagnosis and management of both benign and malignant hematologic conditions and adult medical oncology patients.

“I am very much looking forward to incorporating the advanced practice nursing role into the care we provide to hematology and oncology patients. Part of this includes close collaboration with our current medical oncologists. Expanding roles allows us to serve more individuals in need of expert hematology and oncology care close to home,” Kick said.

Prior to coming to Meritus, Kick worked as a certified registered adult gerontology nurse practitioner at Wellspan Medical Oncology and Hematology Services.

Kick said that it was Meritus’ vision, strategic plan and focus on culture and community that drew her to the health system.

“I’m also looking forward to the opening of the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2025,” she said.

For Dr. McCormack, he said that he is looking forward to something else…

“Relaxing and golf; that’s my agenda,” he laughed.

Dr. McCormack’s last day is Friday, December 30, 2022.
