The inpatient rehabilitation unit is a service of Total Rehab Care, the region's only rehabilitation provider accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Our staff of experienced health care professionals is expert at helping people return to their lives after trauma, injury or illness. Whatever your illness or injury may be, our caring and compassionate staff will tailor a complete program of treatment and therapy to address your unique needs. We are delighted you are considering being our guest so we can work together to help you regain your strength, build new skills, and achieve your highest potential.

Admission Criteria

Inpatient Rehabilitation Services is specifically designed to serve individuals that have suffered an illness and/or injury resulting in decreased functional independence. Prior to admission, the patient must:

  • Be referred by a physician, social worker, therapist or family member
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Require 24-hour rehabilitation nursing and medical care
  • Demonstrate the ability and willingness to progress and recover
  • Have caregivers available for training and education sessions
  • Be able to tolerate at least three hours of therapy each day
  • Require a minimum of physical therapy and occupational therapy services
  • Expected less than three weeks length of stay
  • Planned discharge to home/caregiver
  • Mild spinal injuries resulting in partial paralysis

Program Features

Excellence in Service: The Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits Inpatient Rehabilitation Services as an adult Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program. CARF accreditation ensures that the quality of services provided meets the highest
possible national standards of care in rehabilitation. The staff of Total Rehab Care participates in an onsite survey process every three years.

Patient and Caregiver Centered: At Inpatient Rehabilitation Services we recognize that injury and illness impacts not only the patient, but also the entire family and support network. While the patient is at the center of our team focused care, we also provide structured support and education for

Rehabilitation Standards of Care: A specialized schedule of daily care is created for each patient and includes individualized therapy sessions, nursing treatment time to complete patient teaching,social work services for a coordinated discharge process, and room for rest periods, if needed to
build up endurance. Unique to the rehabilitation standard of care is the opportunity for the patient and/or family to “test out” their skills at supervised community events.

Continuum of Care: When a patient has made sufficient progress and is ready to leave Inpatient Rehabilitation Services, the patient’s next step is to consider continued rehabilitation in the outpatient setting. The outpatient department of Total Rehab Care focuses on rehabilitative care for the best possible outcome for independent living, return to community activities, as well as return to work or school.


Adolescents: The Inpatient Rehab Unit at Meritus Medical Center cares for 16 and 17 year-old adolescents. Our care team works with patients, families, support systems, and the education system to enable these teens to return home and to normal activities of daily living. We have cared for this number of teens during the years listed below.

2015: Two 16 year-olds

2016: One 17- year-old

2017: No patients under the age of 18
