Heart and Stroke Care

Heart Care

Heart disease is a common health condition within our community. At Meritus Medical Center, we offer medical and surgical interventions for the following heart conditions:

  • Arrhythmia (irregular heart beat)
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)

Treating Heart Conditions

Our board certified cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologist help you get to the root of your heart condition. Diagnostic tests to identify heart concerns include: EKGs, holter monitor, echocardiogram, stress testing, radionuclide stress testing, standard treadmill and dipyridamole exercise testing.

Our electrophysiology lab is used to diagnose and treat complex disorders in the heart's electrical function such as arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation. An electrophysiologist performs procedures including dual chamber pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillator and catheter ablation.

Three state-of-the-art catheterization labs are available for diagnostic catheterizations as well as emergency percutaneous cardiac intervention (PCI) for heart attack patients and elective angioplasty for the early diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease.

After a heart disease diagnosis, patients must modify their lifestyle to prevent another heart event from happening. Meritus Medical Center's cardiac rehabilitation program helps heart patients recover from a cardiac event and find ways to lower their risk of future heart trouble.

Stroke Care

Experiencing a stroke means your thought process and mobility are suddenly at stake. Knowing the signs of stroke and quick reaction by you and those around you can save your life, and save your independence. Meritus Medical Center is recognized by the state of Maryland as a Primary Stroke Center and received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award—the highest level of recognition possible.

Stroke care starts with a high-performing team of emergency room physicians, nurses and neurologists who are focused on stopping the progression of brain cell destruction caused by stroke. Alongside our emergency medicine physicians and neurologists, vascular neurologists from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center help diagnose and manage stroke using live video conferencing. Meritus Medical Center is the only community hospital in Maryland who has telemedicine affiliation with a nationally recognized stroke center.

After receiving treatment in the hospital's emergency department, patients receive expert care in Meritus Medical Center's designated stroke unit where nurses certified in stroke and telemetry care carefully monitor patients.

A team of rehabilitation nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, pharmacists and care managers begin the rehabilitation process in Meritus Medical Center's inpatient rehabilitation unit. Once discharged from the hospital, further outpatient rehabilitation occurs at Total Rehab Care. Stroke patients can also participate in a monthly stroke and brain injury support group.

The goal of our stroke program is to decrease the number of strokes by awareness and prevention and give both hope and assistance to those who have suffered a stroke.
