Meritus pushes forward with green energy initiatives

May 12, 2023 - Press Release

Meritus Health, Western Maryland's largest healthcare system, is committed to caring for the entire person and the entire community, along with all the things that impact the two – including the environment.

Healthcare facilities can have a significant impact on the environment, and Meritus Health is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and creating a more sustainable future.

“Green energy not only benefits the environment but also supports the health and well-being of our patients, neighbors, loved ones and community,” said Dave Lehr, chief strategy officer.

The health system is undertaking a multi-phased Microgrid resiliency project that will provide power generation from on-site renewable sources and combined heat and power generation, EV charging, and absorption chilling, all controlled through an intelligent microgrid controls platform.

FESCO Energy LLC (FESCO), a leading integrator of cleantech solutions for sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy, has been awarded the first phase of the comprehensive project by Meritus.

"We have a responsibility to promote health in all aspects of our work. Using green energy is an important part of our commitment to improving the health of our community by helping to create a healthier environment for everyone," Lehr said. "This project is a direct reflection of our mission to improve the health of our community,” he added.

As a result of these environmentally responsible upgrades, the hospital campus will have an enhanced, uninterrupted power supply, which is essential for patient care, reduction of emissions, and provide cost savings.

“The cost savings means that Meritus will be in a position to invest in even more ways to care for our community. We are proud of this partnership, which is positioning Meritus to lead the way towards investing in more sustainable energy solutions in our community,” Lehr said.
