APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Unique partnership inspires next generation of healthcare workers

June 7, 2023 - Press Release

Meritus Health, the largest health care provider in Western Maryland and the Washington County Public Schools partnered to offer an apprenticeship program, where students work paid positions on the frontlines of healthcare.

The 12-month experience recently concluded, with a majority of the participants planning to continue to work at the local health system or now seeking higher education on their pathway to a college degree.

Eight students were placed into roles including security, patient transport and patient access. Five will continue to work at least through this summer, with a handful planning to stay long-term. Others are pursuing higher education and say they hope to return to the health system upon graduation.

“This is an exceptional group of young people that we were honored to have be part of the Meritus team,” said Jena Judd, director in Team Member Services. “We are so proud to say many of these students were inspired to pursue healthcare careers. We are thrilled to watch them work towards their career goals, learn and serve our community through this unique program,” she added.

“As an anchor organization in Washington County, and one of the largest employers, it’s important that students know what career options that exist in Washington County,” said Maulik Joshi, Dr.P.H., president and CEO.

“As we look to the future needs of our community, we know that Meritus will need to continue to develop an engaged and inspired workforce. This group really exemplifies that, and our hope is that they find their passion in caring for others,” Joshi said.

“WCPS’ partnership with Meritus is invaluable to our student apprentices. They had authentic, hands-on learning experiences that give them a leading edge in their pursuits after graduation. These opportunities allowed students to explore their career interests and passions while developing skills and talents at a high-quality healthcare system,” said Dr. David Sovine, superintendent of WCPS.

Meritus Health would like to congratulate the following students on the completion of the apprenticeship program and high school graduation:
