Time is critical during a stroke; every second can be the difference in surviving and minimizing the risk of long term disability. Stroke treatments are most effective within one hour of the onset of a stroke, therefore it is important to know the warning signs so you can take immediate action and reduce your chances of harm.

Warning signs include sudden:

  • weakness of the face, arm, or leg, usually on one side of the body
  • confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • severe headache with no known cause

Not everyone will exhibit all of these warning signs and sometimes they may even seem to disappear, but it is still important to seek medical attention immediately. If you have any of the stroke warning signs, call 911 right away! If treatment is received in the first 3 hours, chances of a full recovery are greatly improved.
