As a patient at the John R. Marsh Cancer Center, Sunny England dreamed of creating a place that was bright and comforting for those receiving cancer treatment. Mrs. England passed away on May 8, 2004, but her enduring spirit and legacy will live on thanks to a generous donation made through her will to help make her dream a reality. When construction of the connector between Robinwood Professional Center and Meritus Medical Center began, it was also the perfect time for the John R. Marsh Cancer Center to do some remodeling. The center broke ground last September to provide additional space to the infusion and chemotherapy area of the center and build a beautiful solarium, aptly named “Sunny’s Place.” “The plan was always to expand the treatment area,” said Susan Lopp, administrative director of the John R. Marsh Cancer Center. “They timed the remodel to go along with the construction of the connector to the new medical center.”
The center now boasts a triangular glass solarium to offer patients more sunshine and a beautiful and private view of the outdoors during cancer treatment. This soothing space was decorated to look less clinical and more inviting. It has warm colors and was furnished with patients’ needs in mind. Each patient’s comfortable seat is equipped with heat and massage functions as well as a side table to hold a book or beverage. Next to each seat is an area for a family member or friend to sit and join those receiving treatment. With the construction of Sunny’s Place, the John R. Marsh Cancer Center was also able to increase the number of private and semi-private rooms that are available to patients for treatment—something for which patients had made specific requests. The nurses’ station was also remodeled to provide a more efficient work space and added sinks. “We asked our nursing staff what their wish list would be so the area could be designed with nurse feedback in mind,” Lopp said. Sunny’s Place and the addition to the John R. Marsh Cancer Center were completed in January.
