When you or a loved on is facing with a life-threatening disease, you want the most talented, expert physician you can find—someone knowledgeable enough to have written the textbook in that specialty. For women in our region who have been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, that physician is just a few minutes away: Neil Rosenshein, MD, FACOG, and gynecologic oncologist. During Dr. Rosenshein’s thirty-six-year career, he has authored books, published articles, conducted medical research, and won numerous awards. For fifteen years, he served as the director of gynecologic oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His passion is to educate women outside major urban areas about ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancer. Known nationally and locally as a champion of women’s health, he treats women with gynecologic cancers at the Meritus Gynecologic Oncology Center in Hagerstown. In last five years, nearly 500 women have come to Meritus Health and been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. While less common than breast cancer, cancer of the reproductive organs is more troublesome in its detection and diagnosis. Cervical cancer is detected with an annual Pap test. Ovarian cancer, on the other hand, has no available screening test, and its symptoms may be vague. There are five gynecological cancers—cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar—and like breast cancer, cancer generally increases as women age. This is sobering news for women, but according to Dr. Rosenshein, the best defense is an offense. He urges women to stay on top of their health with an annual well-woman check up, Pap test, mammogram, and colonoscopy. Although vigilance is the best way to prevent a late-stage cancer diagnosis, some cancers, like ovarian, slip under the radar screen. Ovarian cancer accounts for only 3% of all cancers in women, yet it causes more deaths than any other gynecological cancer. Having access to a cancer subspecialist like Dr. Roshenshein can make all the difference. Studies show that women treated by a gynecologic oncologist have a better chance of prolonged survival compared to those not seen by a subspecialist. A gynecologic oncologist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer involving a woman’s reproductive organs. In addition to a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, physicians complete a fellowship in precancerous and cancerous conditions of the female reproductive tract. With expertise in surgical oncology, Dr. Rosenshein operates on women with gynecologic cancer and provides direction to radiation and chemotherapy physicians for patients’ post-surgical treatments. Before Dr. Rosenshein established a practice in Hagerstown, Maryland ten years ago, women in the tri-state area diagnosed with gynecologic cancer had the option of driving to Baltimore, Rockville, Hershey, or Morgantown for treatment by a subspecialist—a heavy load for someone fighting a life-changing disease. Now, it is Dr. Rosenshein who travels the distance, seeing over 150 patients each month in Hagerstown. Cancer in any form is frightening. Receiving compassionate care close to home by a renowned medical expert offers hope to women.
