Is your child ready for kindergarten?
This checklist will give you an idea of what areas your child should be doing well in before he or she starts kindergarten. If there are any areas that concern you, we can help your child gain skills and confidence through occupational therapy, speech therapy, and/or physical therapy.
Fine Motor Skills
- Holds scissors, cuts with scissors in the thumb-up position, and can cut along a straight line
- Can hold a pencil or crayon between the thumb and pad of index finger with pencil or crayon resting on the first joint of the middle finger
- Can copy square, triangle, and circle shapes
- Can spell first name fairly legibly
Speech Skills
- Talks in five-word to six-word word sentences
- Asks and answers questions about surroundings
- Speaks clearly
- Carries on a conversation
- Can repeat a sentence of five to ten words
- Can repeat five to seven numbers
- Counts to ten
- Identifies rhyming words
- Starting to identify letters of the alphabet
Other
- Can sort items by color, shape, and size
- Can identify about six body parts
- Shows understanding of time of day
Social/Emotional Skills
- Can separate from parents without getting upset
- Beginning to show self-control
- Beginning to recognize authority
- Plays with other children
- Expresses feelings and needs
- Follows simple directions
- Knows how to share and is beginning to learn how to take turns
- Focuses on activity for 20 to 30 minutes
Self-Care Skills
- Can use buttons, zippers, and snaps

Gross Motor Skills
- Runs, jumps, and skips
- Walks backwards
