Meritus Health's John R. Marsh Cancer Center Earns National Accreditation

HAGERSTOWN – Following a survey review in March 2016, Meritus Health’s John R. Marsh Cancer Center was awarded a three-year term of accreditation by the American College of Radiology or ACR. The recognition was for radiation oncology services at the cancer center where high-energy radiation is used to treat cancer and relieve pain.

Meritus Health’s John R. Marsh Cancer Center has two radiation oncologists on staff – Dan Cornell, M.D., the director of the program; and Edward Jung, M.D, who is fellowship trained by the Cleveland Clinic. The center offers the TrueBeam™ radiotherapy/radiosurgery system, allowing for built-in imager checks and adjustments based on patient positioning and tumor motion due to the patient’s breathing. Unlike other radiosurgical systems like CyberKnife™, TrueBeam™ eliminates the need for tumor markers by providing accurate tumor targeting in the least minimally invasive approach to cancer treatment.

The gold seal of accreditation assures patients that the facility meets the highest level of patient safety standards and image quality, since the center and its personnel went through a comprehensive review to earn the award. Patients concerned about radiation dose safety are encouraged by the ACR to seek out center’s that display the accreditation seal.

The ACR is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body with more than 600 accredited sites and 27 years of accreditation experience.
