Program Mission Statement:

The purpose of the Meritus Medical Center PGY-1 Residency is to provide the pharmacist with a well-rounded experience that will prepare them for a role in direct patient care. The pharmacist, upon completion of the program, will be prepared to enter into a position that will require them to critically evaluate patients and take an active role in recommending pharmacotherapy. The pharmacist should also be proficient in patient education, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, have strong communication skills, and be able to successfully implement new services. The pharmacist may also be prepared to enter into a specialty training program, as well as sit for examination for Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy.

About our Residency Program:

The Meritus Medical Center Residency is a part of the Trivergent Health Alliance in conjunction with Frederick Memorial Hospital and Western Maryland Health System. Our accredited program will provide a unique opportunity for residents to gain in depth training for patient care, clinical services, education, and leadership. Residents completing this program will be competent and confident practitioners for direct and indirect patient care in multiple practice environments.

Meritus Medical Center pharmacy consists of a decentralized model within the innovative Medical Center. Pharmacists are located on each floor and work with other health care providers to provide optimal patient care and safe medication practices.

Pharmacists participate in multidisciplinary rounds and provide patient education, as well as other services, which include:

Required Rotations:

  • Critical Care
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Outpatient Oncology
  • Pediatrics

Elective Rotations (5 weeks):

  • Clinical Informatics
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nutrition Support
  • Psychiatry
  • Transitions in Care

Longitudinal activities:

  • Research Project
  • Medication Safety
  • Administration
  • inPHARMation Newsletter
  • Brown Bag Therapy Management

Staffing Requirement:

  • Every other weekend in addition to clinical duties
  • Staffing in central pharmacy 1 week day evening (8 hour shift) every other week in addition to clinical duties

Required Conferences:

  • ASHP Mid-year Clinical Meeting
  • Eastern States Residency Conference

Certifications Available:

  • Teaching Certificate Program (Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

  • Anticoagulation
  • Nutrition Support
  • Medication Rounds
  • Discharge Counseling
  • Medication Reconciliation
  • Code Blue Team Support
